Compare both seam directions.
Backing width equals quilt width plus twice the overage; backing length uses the same rule. The tool estimates how many usable fabric-width panels cover each direction, subtracts finished seam loss, and rounds purchase length upward.
A directional print may make the lower-yardage layout unsuitable. Use the table to choose the orientation that preserves the design.
