Free straight-grain binding calculator

Turn the quilt perimeter into strips you can cut.

Calculate total binding length, number of width-of-fabric strips and yardage for straight-grain binding.

Scope: This calculator is for straight-grain strips joined end to end. Curved edges generally require bias binding and a different fabric calculation.

Perimeter + finishing margin.

The calculator adds all four quilt sides, adds the finishing allowance, divides by usable fabric width and rounds the strip count up. Yardage is strips × strip width, rounded up to the next quarter yard.

The default 20-inch margin follows a common conservative workflow; adjust it to match your method and pattern. See the binding width chart before choosing strip width.
