Quilt binding width chart
Choose strip width before calculating yardage.
The same quilt perimeter can require different fabric amounts depending on the cut width, fold style, batting loft and desired finished edge.
| Cut strip width | Common use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in | Narrow, low-bulk finish | Seam allowance and whether the folded binding fully covers the back seam. |
| 2.25 in | Trim double-fold binding | Batting loft, stitching method and desired finished width. |
| 2.5 in | Common double-fold starting point | Still a preference, not a universal rule; test a sample. |
| 3 in | Wider or higher-loft finish | How much width appears on front/back and whether corners remain manageable. |
Use the pattern when it specifies a binding method. Curves and bias binding need different cutting logic from straight-grain WOF strips.
