Quilt binding width chart

Choose strip width before calculating yardage.

The same quilt perimeter can require different fabric amounts depending on the cut width, fold style, batting loft and desired finished edge.

Cut strip widthCommon useWhat to verify
2 inNarrow, low-bulk finishSeam allowance and whether the folded binding fully covers the back seam.
2.25 inTrim double-fold bindingBatting loft, stitching method and desired finished width.
2.5 inCommon double-fold starting pointStill a preference, not a universal rule; test a sample.
3 inWider or higher-loft finishHow much width appears on front/back and whether corners remain manageable.

Use the pattern when it specifies a binding method. Curves and bias binding need different cutting logic from straight-grain WOF strips.
